Busting The Myth about Green Tea

Question / Dilemma: Since there is a conscious attempt to lead a healthy life, I have shifted my loyalties from Chai to green tea. But someone today remarked that green tea is a good way to lose weight, leaving me super confused. In my over enthusiasm, have I started walking the opposite way?

Answer: Having green tea does benefit weight loss. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have green tea at all. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants and also has antibacterial properties. You can have a cup of green tea everyday.

Weight Reduction Tips

Reducing weight is increasingly becoming popular across the world. Sedentary lifestyle and increasing number of lifestyle related therapeutic conditions are further propelling everyone towards wellness and fitness. The most common  lifestyle disorder symptom is weight gain. Fortunately it is also the easiest to control and manage provided slight changes are made in the current lifestyle. Weight reduction is possible with the right approach towards what we eat through out the day and the activities that we indulge in.

Here are a few weight reduction tips to lose weight.

Don’t starve yourself: The most common myth amongst people for weight reduction is a strict diet. Few go on yo-yo or crash diet, low calorie diets, atkins diet, banana diet etc. But they fail to reduce weight. Starving sends the message of not enough food and the body slows down the metabolism reducing the speed of calorie burn. Thus fat and the extra pounds burn much more  slower than before making weight reduction difficult.

Don’t skip breakfast: If you skip the nutrition at breakfast then there is seldom chance that you would make it later in the day. Skipping breakfast lowers the metabolism and lack of nutrition makes the body become weak and vulnerable to eating snacks and junk food later in the day. Eat healthy food for breakfast and you would feel fuller and eat less too.

Eat meals on time: Non timely meals disturb the body metabolic cycle making it difficult for the body to adapt to a schedule. Also eating meals late makes you tend to over eat because staying hungry for longer makes you feel hungrier psychology resulting in overeating. Hunger reduces the efficiency of the body reducing the metabolism, hence the weight reduction. Time your meals and watch the progress.

How Green Tea Can Help You Lose Weight

Eat something and then burn calories because you consumed it. Sounds perfect or what? Jump start your day by drinking a cup of green tea which refreshes your mind and day as it is packed with important nutrients.

A study at the University of Geneva found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those only on caffeine.Green tea and weight loss go hand-in-hand.

Green tea leaves are steamed, not fermented, hence preserve more polyphenols. They are low in calories with no fat, trans-fat, cholesterol and saturated fat in it. The components of green tea includes catechins, caffeine, Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, Gamma Acid Butyric Acid (GABA), Flavonoids, Polysaccharides, Fluoride and Theanins (amino acid). Epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG, one of six catechins in green tea and the most abundant. One cup of green tea contains approximately 100-200 milligrams of EGCG.

Green tea is packed with antioxidants. All the wear and tear of our body along with our meat consumption releases free radicals in the body. Many of these free radicals serve useful physiological functions, but they can be toxic when generated in excess by causing damage to DNA, tissues, etc., possibly creating cancerous cells. Anti-oxidants react with these free radicals and mitigate their effects on our body.Green tea increases the antibiotic effectiveness. Antioxidants includes Vitamin E, Vitamin C, or beta carotene, which protects the body from the damaging effects of oxidation. Research has indicated one of the main antioxidants, EGCG, is found in green tea. EGCG has been found to be more powerful than both Vitamin E and C. EGCG protects cells and DNA from damage believed to be linked to cancer, heart disease, and other serious illnesses.Green tea helps to lose weight. EGCG is also known to stimulate brown fat, which is even extracted and used as a weight loss supplement.

The other active ingredient in green tea is catechin that helps you lose weight by influencing intestinal and cell metabolism in several ways. When green tea is consumed the catechin inhibits the intestinal lipases which in turn decreases the fat absorption and increases the fat excretion. Due to which the thermogenic process occurs which decreases the lipogenic enzymes and hence suppresses the appetite.
Green tea extract resulted in a significant (4%) increase in energy expenditure.

The polyphenols in green tea helps prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. This inhibits the formation of the atherosclerotic plaques. Therefore, the consumption of green tea is believed to be linked to a lower risk of heart disease. It also helps improves glucose tolerance as it increases insulin sensitivity. EGCG is the most active catechin that is reponsible for glucose uptake.

Besides EGCG and other nutrients, green tea also contains caffeine. Latest research is showing that coffee may help you lose weight, typically due to its caffeine content. So, the caffeine in green tea might be a double benefit for its weight loss effects.

Oh, and green tea contains almost 0 calories! Almost 0 because everything we consume besides water contains some calories, but it is effectively 0 in green tea. In fact, considering the thermogenic effects of green tea, it could be even considered a negative calorie food.

But do remember that moderation is the key, so you might can have 1 to 2 cups a day as it also contains caffeine in it.

To prepare green tea, boil a cup of hot water. Pour the hot water into tea cup. Dip a green tea bag in a cup of hot water, for 30-60 seconds. If you must, add a bit sugar or honey. If you want maximal weight loss benefits of green tea, then skip the sugar or the honey. Do not add milk to green tea as this might limit the absorption of antioxidants in the green tea.
