The leg muscles include the front thigh muscles (Quadriceps or Quads), back thigh muscles (Hamstring), inner thigh muscles (Adductors), outer thigh muscles (Abductors), calf muscles (the Gastrocnemius) & the Gluteus maximus, located in the butt.
Because the leg muscles are the largest in the body, building these muscles raises the metabolism which in turn burns more calories even when resting and so benefits weight loss. Exercises like lunges, squats and leg extensions target specific muscles and should be included as part of an overall exercise workout.
Whether your aim is marathon running or just fitness, increasing your leg strength can be highly beneficial to your overall health. Focus on muscle-building to improve leg strength. Squats, stair climbing, leg curl are all suitable for toned yet strong legs.
